This is one of the finest lights we have ever had at City Lights.
It was purchased from an 1870's mansion here in Cambridge,
although most likely it predated the building. The fixture
is exceptionally intact. There is one replaced section of
chain and the original shade holders were missing and
have been replaced with re-casts from original holders.
In addition, the finish is in wonderful condition.
What makes this already outstanding light even better is the finish.
The finish is called Damascene and is usually only
seen on the columns of whale oil lamps. The two tone effect is achieved
by applying gold plated designs to the brass spinnings, gold plate acts
as a resist when the purple oxidation that is applied to
the background. All of the center spinnings have this
finish and it is about 85% perfect. This is a truely
museum quality light.
